工作和个人生活是否应该分开
Watching that an employee in the office is concentrating on her private life rather than on the job per se, the manager is suggested to think whether the private life should be independent upon the job. Clearly, this question should not be answered presumptuously, because the decision of the manager surely influences the employee’s performance, the productivity, and more.
Let us start from an interesting analogy. We know that the lion or tiger has its own job. That is to hunt, to obtain foods for itself or its children. However, we often watch on the TV programs that lions play with baby lions. It seems to me that lions do not separate job from life, because while they play, the young lions are virtually learning how to “work”, to hunt.
We human beings are somewhat different from lions in that we go to work every day by means of taking bus, metro, or walking (as so said BMW) in offices, factories, or other job sites that are almost entirely separated from what we called private life. We do not teach or feed our kids in the office. We do not say love to lovers in factory (office might be an exception). We do not lay computer games while we are in job site although both computers and the software are available. However, this has resulted in various social, household, and other issues. To commute between offices and living places wastes lots of money, time, and energy. Simultaneously, it causes traffic jam and pollutes the environment. Five years ago when I worked in Beijing, the capital of China, I found that some employees took four hours or longer every day to commute and they were exhausted from Monday to Friday, and four weeks every month, 12 months every year. But we cannot draw a conclusion that jobs should not be separated from private life, although we understand the drawbacks.
Mixing job and private life has been preached and practiced once a time. In some companies, a group of employees are allowed to work at home. However, they did not become happy. Nor did they increase the productivity. Surprisingly, they were more exhausted because of endless household jobs and other interference from private life. For instance, my sister works at home using computers and internet. However, she clearly lacks the formal and serious job-feeling. That is she wants to have colleagues in a formal job site with decent working environment.
We human beings per se are a paradox with complicated emotions and unstable ideas. We always want to have what we have not had. When we work in a formal office, we are easily to complain that the private life has been sacrificed. While we are allowed to mix the private life with the job, ironically, we want to have a serious thing that we complained and unsatisfied with before. Whether the private life and the job should be separated? We leave the question to those who want to think and seek.
